MSUM Apple computer update

Faculty\Staff,

Last September, Apple released OS X 10.11 “El Capitan” via the Mac App Store. As previously communicated, the MSUM Information Technology department has been performing tests to confirm the supported services work as designed. As a result, we are recommending the operating system upgrade to El Capitan for those that need it. However, we also recommend that the MSUM IT Staff perform the upgrade for you.

For those of you that will be getting new Apple computers on or after Dec 18th, 2015 the operating system will be El Capitan.

For those that are currently running 10.10 Yosemite or 10.9 Mavericks you are not required to update. Yosemite and Mavericks are still being updated with current security patches and have no known issues with our systems.

Can I perform the upgrade myself? Likely, you can execute the update on your own. We’ve had several instances where the upgrade didn’t perform as expected and the computer operating system needed to be reinstalled. We encourage you to contact the MSUM IT Helpdesk and we will create a support ticket to schedule your upgrade with you.

What if I don’t know how to upgrade? Contact the MSUM IT Helpdesk and we will create a support ticket for you to get the upgrade scheduled.

What changes are in the new operating system? This link has the details to the changes within the operating system. http://www.apple.com/osx/

Do I have to upgrade? No. Typically, software updates will require an update to the operating system. If your system is not experiencing any software issues, we recommend that you do not update the operating system.
