MSUM’s Doing Business in China Program Receives Innovation in Global Education Award

Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Doing Business in China Program has been named a winner of the 2015 Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Academic and Student Affairs Awards for Innovation in Global Education. The award recognizes the creative and high impact practices of faculty and staff that increase students’ understanding of the growing interdependence of nations and peoples through cross-cultural and international experiences.

The Doing Business in China Program includes exchange agreements with Chinese universities, visiting scholars, unique curricula, the use of technology to link students at MSUM with students around the world, community events, and faculty research.
“Understanding global issues is critical to any career in the business world,”
said Marsha Weber, dean of the College Business and Innovation. “Our Doing Business in China program helps students prepare for diverse business opportunities and helps them understand that culture, language, political systems, geography, and socio-economic factors all influence a company’s business practices.  These skills are vital for success in the global marketplace.”
Some of the unique offerings of the university’s Doing Business in China Program include:
  • A Doing Business in China certificate for students and community members that prepares students and business leaders for global business opportunities.
  • Virtual learning experiences connect students from MSUM, Shanghai Finance University and Xi’an University of Science and Technology, both in China. These cross-cultural interactions allow students to study, create, collaborate and converse together across time zones.
  • Chinese scholars visit MSUM to conduct research with MSUM faculty, teach and guest lecture, and speak at community events.
  • Annual Global Innovation Day features a variety of activities related to global business, including a strong emphasis on doing business in China.
  • Innovative faculty members Dr. Ruth Lumb and Dr. Peter Geib bring a wealth knowledge and experience to their students, having traveled and researched extensively in China for a combined total of more than 25 years. They have also published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals resulting from their travels and research.
In order to increase the scope of global studies, MSUM plans to launch a Doing Business in Latin America certificate in the near future.
