The University Writing Support Center Needs Tutors!

Do you enjoy writing? Do you plan to enter a teaching profession or are you thinking about going to graduate school? Are you a good writer (in any major) who enjoys helping others with their writing? If the answer to any of these questions is “Yes,” please consider tutoring in the University Writing Support Center. The UWSC is now open and accepting clients (though our grand opening will be a bit later).

The UWSC seeks writing consultants from all majors. Writing consultants for the University Writing Support Center are selected from those students who complete ENGL 395, Theory and Methods of Tutoring, which will be offered in the spring semester. The course meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:30-2:45, for the first half of the semester. After midterm, the course meets just once each week so that students can participate in a practicum in the UWSC. This means that you schedule yourself for a couple of hours tutoring clients under the supervision of an experienced tutor.

One-on-one tutoring is especially relevant for prospective educators. Why? Because many middle schools and high schools across the country are opening writing centers and very few teachers are familiar with writing center administration, theory, or practice. This expertise looks very good on a CV. Tutoring experience could also be very valuable if you plan to go on to graduate school and intend to apply for a teaching assistantship – an extremely competitive process at most grad schools. In this kind of context, it is always nice to be able to show that you have previous experience working with students. The pay is competitive for writing consultants in the UWSC, starting at $10 an hour (with raises every semester if the budget allows) and you’ll be tutoring in a pleasant space in Lommen Hall. Plus, there are advantages to not having to go off-campus for a job. If you have questions or want to learn more, please contact Dr. McCord at 5860 or mccordm@mnstate.edu.
