Summer Cinema Series: Tonight features “Metropolis”

Mondays in July feature silent films

Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Summer Cinema Series enters its 39th season with a silent comedy-drama, a silent sci-fi drama, a silent drama-romance and an evening of silent comedy short films. 

Second in the line-up on Monday, July 13, is Metropolis, starring Brigitte Helm. This 1927 science fiction film depicts a futuristic city sharply divided between the working class and the city planners. It is considered a masterpiece of director Fritz Lang.
 
Heart o’ the Hills, a 1919 drama featuring Mary Pickford, takes place in the Kentucky hills, where greed, revenge and romance fuel the action. The film screens on July 20.
Closing the series on Monday, July 27, is a selection of silent comedy short films by Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Charley Chase and Laurel & Hardy. After this showing, treats will be served in the hallway.
All shows are in Weld Hall on the MSUM campus and start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $4 per movie, and are available at the door. Pre-show organ music performed by organists Alex Swanson (July 6 and 20)and Ryan Hardy (July 13 and 27)begins at 7:15 p.m.
