Program and reception recognizing the service and generosity of Dr. Charles Russell Magel to be held April 23

There will be a program and reception recognizing the service and generosity of Dr. Charles Russell Magel to Minnesota State University Moorhead. It will be held Thursday, April 23 at 11 a.m. in the Livingston Lord Library commons.

The program will recognize Magel’s $800,000 gift (given in May 2014) to support student scholarships and acknowledge his impact on the university’s library and Philosophy Department. A special wall plaque created in his honor will also be unveiled.

Guest speakers include Scott Nelson, Alumni Foundation president; MSUM President Anne Blackhurst; Brittney Goodman, executive director of library services; Randy Cagle, dean of the College of Humanities & Social Sciences; and Sam Wai, a friend of Magel and trustee of the Charles R. Magel Trust.

Magel (1920-2014) generously shared his gift of leadership as founder of MSUM’s Philosophy Department (1963), long-time professor and department chairman. He played a significant role in building Livingston Lord Library into a first-class facility and elevating all of the libraries in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System to a higher standard.

A reception will follow the program.
