Dr. Phil Mouch, Philosophy, to present colloquium March 25
Dr. Phil Mouch, Philosophy, is going to present his colloquium with the topic “Omelas, Happiness, and the Bargain” in MacLean Hall 273, Wednesday, March 25, 4:30pm-5:30pm. His talk will make the fifth meeting of this year’s Colloquium Series of the MSUM Philosophy Department. The following is a brief summary of his talk:
In her story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas,” Ursula K. LeGuin dramatizes the myth of the scapegoat, one figure asked to bear the suffering of entire society. This challenges the reader to evaluate the notion that the ends justify the means. But more deeply, LeGuin’s story forces us to consider our own conceptions of happiness. It is this question of happiness that I want to examine.
All are welcome. For further information, contact Dr. Chang-Seong Hong at cshong@mnstate.edu.
