The MSUM School of Performing Arts just completed its first international Study Abroad course – “World Music in Trinidad.” From Jan. 2 to 12, MSUM students traveled across the island with students from the University of Delaware.
They visited steel drum “pan yards,” and attended hands-on instruction sessions with internationally celebrated Trinidadian steel drum artist and arranger Amrit Samaroo. They visited museums, attended calypso performances, and participated in lectures led by Kenyon Williams, Music. In their free time, they snorkeled in the crystal-clear waters of Tobago, and visited a bird sanctuary by boat to witness the evening nesting of hundreds of scarlet ibis cranes. The greatest surprise of the trip, however, was the unannounced visit of U.S. Ambassador of Cultural Affairs in Trinidad, Stephen Weeks, who heard of the class and decided to stop in to see what was going on!
