A reminder about recycling
MSUM offers recycling services in every building on campus, and the Office of Campus Sustainability appreciates everyone’s efforts to divert waste from landfill. Frankly, we’re doing a great job! But here are a couple reminders to help things run smoothly.
The “Recycling at Work” office paper recycling boxes at your desk: We ask that each person who has one of these empties it into the larger bins located in the hallway or, in some cases, in your outer office. If you need one of these boxes, please contact Joe.Herbst@mnstate.edu
Secure Document Destruction: when these are full please call the telephone number on the container and Minnkota Recycling will come pick them up. Tip: you may use these to securely dispose of those annoying credit card offers you get in the mail at home.
Cardboard Recycling: we appreciate your efforts to recycle cardboard, but please flatten the boxes, as well as remove any packing material. Un-flattened boxes fill up the dumpsters very quickly, requiring extra trips from the compactor truck (which doesn’t get the same mileage as a Prius), and causing a mess at the dumpster sites. If you’re depositing the boxes at the recycling stations in the hallway, please flatten and tuck them behind the bins.
Small step equals big news for the future of recycling in Clay County: Earlier this week the Clay County Board unanimously passed a resolution to invest up to $40,000 to put together a plan for an advanced Material Recovery Facility (MRF). A MRF allows all recycling to be deposited in the same bin (single-stream recycling), and is then separated at the facility. This makes recycling much easier, and would also allow for curbside collection at the numerous apartment buildings in the city. Tip: due to recent developments in the market for recycled glass, we no longer need to separate our glass by color.
Thank you for helping to keep MSUM green,
