Minnesota State University Moorhead will award degrees to 930 students during its spring commencement program Friday, May 16 in the university’s Nemzek Fieldhouse. Graduates of the College of Arts, Media & Communication, College of Business & Innovation, and College of Humanities & Social Sciences will participate in the 9 a.m. ceremony. Graduates of the College of Education & Human Services, and College of Science, Health & the Environment will participate in the 2 p.m. program.
Moorhead native and State Representative Ben Lien, a 2008 MSUM political science graduate, will deliver the morning commencement address. His district, 4A, is comprised of the city of Moorhead and Oakport Township. Lien is serving his first term in the Legislature after his election in 2012. Among the four committees he serves on in the House of Representatives, he enjoys his work in the Higher Education Finance and Policy Committee.
Dr. Gerald Rieber will deliver the afternoon commencement address. A Moorhead native and a 1993 MSUM biology graduate, he is a partner and owner of Glacial Lakes Orthopaedics in Watertown, S.D. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and received the Healthgrades top 10 percent nationwide award for artificial joint replacement in 2005. He is also an adjunct instructor for the University of South Dakota School of Health Sciences, University of Nebraska, and Augsburg College, providing mentoring opportunities and clinical rotation instruction for physician assistant and nurse practitioner students.
Rieber is a founding member of Sports Medicine Plus, providing athletic training services to the Watertown School District and local area athletes, and he is certified in the ImPACT concussion evaluation. He serves as team physician for Watertown and surrounding schools.
Rieber attended the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth (‘95) and Minneapolis (‘97) participating in the Rural Physician Associate Program. He completed his general surgery internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Minnesota graduating in 2002. He is a member of the Ramon Gustillo Resident Research Society.
