Musical production of Carrie keeps the horror
MSUM’s University Theatre Series presents new version with special effects
The horror musical Carrie takes the Gaede Stage in the Roland Dille Center for the Arts on the MSUM campus April 30 through May 3 at 7:30 p.m.
The musical version hasn’t been seen since its legendary 1988 Broadway production. MSUM’s production, directed by Craig Ellingson, is a newly reworked and fully re-imagined version, using special effects to depict the telekinesis powers of Carrie and the famous scene in which she’s doused in blood at the school prom. The story is all King’s, though: Carrie White is a misfit. At school, she’s bullied by the popular crowd, and virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, she’s at the mercy of her loving but cruel and overly-protective mother.
The May 2 performance includes a 7 p.m. “Pre-Prom Party.” Discounted tickets go to people in prom attire. Prom snacks and punch will be served, and audience members may get photos taken in a prom-style photo booth. A drawing for “Prom King and Queen” will take place with prizes. A signed performance for the hearing impaired takes place Thursday, May 1.
