Retiree death: Audrey Jones

Audrey Zube Jones, age 92, died peacefully at Tanbark, Jan, 20, 2014. She was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the daughter of Edwin Zube, Sr. and Alice Sethney. Her early childhood was in Wyoming and later she and her brother Edwin Zube, Jr. (deceased), moved in with their Norwegian grandmother Tilda Sethney of Twin Valley, Minnesota. She completed a Bachelor of Arts in English at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN (1943), where she met her beloved late husband, Dr. William M. Jones. She began a long teaching career (1943-1969) starting at Ada and Thief River Falls, MN; McMinnville, OR; Freedom, IN; and finally Beloit, WI. She moved to Berea, KY with her husband in 1969, and completed a Masters in English at Eastern Kentucky University. When her husband took a job at Moorhead State University (MSU, now Minnesota State University Moorhead), Moorhead, MN in 1972, she became the first Director of the External Studies Program at MSU. It became a model program for non-traditional students, especially women, to access a college degree. At her retirement, she was recognized by MSU’s President Roland Dille for her leadership, and again at the 20th Anniversary of the program in 1994. She retired in 1985 and dedicated her time to historical research. She wrote the history of the First Congregation United Church of Christ, Moorhead, MN, completed after two years of research and then she turned to genealogy. She spent a year of research at the Bodleian Library in Oxford, England (1985-86); traveled to Norway, where she met cousin Ranveig Hoel; and made trips to various state archives, including NC where she met her husband’s cousin Houston Jones, who shared her love of family history. Her research culminated in two treasured volumes of family history. She and her husband moved to Lexington, KY in 1996 to be close to family and they became active members of Central Christian Church. Audrey is survived by half-brother Art (Doris) Zube of Riverton, Wyoming; son James (Karen Nuzzo) of Bedford, VA, son Christopher (Linda Benedict)of Pittsburgh, PA, son Jeffrey (Denise Beeler), and daughter Karen (Bev Futrell) Jones of Lexington, KY; 9 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. She had a rich and wonderful life and she will be deeply missed. A Memorial Service was held at Central Christian Church, 205 E.
