Office of Diversity and Inclusion hosts Indigenous Peoples’ Symposium Nov. 8
Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion is a hosting an Indigenous Peoples’ Symposium on Nov. 8. The Truth and Reconciliation themed event features Dr. Erma Vizenor, White Earth Chairwoman, who will describe the importance of constitutional reform for White Earth and other tribal nations.
Professor Tadd Johnson, director of American Indian Studies at University of Minnesota Duluth, will explore 400 years of US-tribal relations. There is also an afternoon session focused on student empowerment led by Dr. Kandace Creel Falcon. Please register by following the link below by Oct. 31 to attend this free event. Reflecting on Experiential Ways of Knowing, Institutional Violence and the Pathways to Diverse Student Empowerment with Dr. Kandace Creel Falcon, Assistant Professor Women and Gender Studies, MSUM.
Beginning with a film screening of a documentary based on 15 Latina/o student interviews grounded in experiential ways of knowing, this short film highlights the experiences of diverse students in historically white Minnesota higher education institutions. The workshop will then open up to developing participants’ own ideas related to higher education based on a cultural capital model – detailing how our cultures strengthen our journeys our lives as learners. Participants will come away with a sense of how our cultural backgrounds are an asset as we move through our social and professional lives.
