Career Center helps students prepare for job search
Students Get Job Ready @ Job Search 101
Colleges and universities spend four years or more preparing students for jobs and careers. But the job search comes before the job offer.
That’s why MSUM’s Career Development Center is hosting Job Search 101 Thursday, Oct. 27 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the university’s Center for Business.
National trends indicate that many students are underprepared for the job market. The truth is, businesses ARE hiring, and this event will allow students to be prepared for the job search.
Area businesses and professionals will help students get ready for the job search through this simulated career fair, where students will meet with prospective employers and practice their job skills in a safe, supportive environment. Students will learn how to make a great first impression, dress for the job they want, develop an elevator speech, write memorable thank you notes, network with local employers and have a successful job fair experience that will lead to job interviews. Employers will give students immediate feedback and constructive comments so they can practice and improve after visiting with each employer.
“We have explored national trends and asked local employers, ‘What are college students missing when it comes to the job search?’ This event will allow employers to give students immediate feedback on where they need to improve,” said Cindy Norberg, assistant director of the Career Development Center. “Students may receive multiple opportunities to interview, but this may be their only opportunity to receive this type of invaluable feedback.”
It’s free to MSUM students with valid ID if they register before noon on Monday, Oct. 24, or $5 at the door.
The event is co-sponsored by Choice Financial Group, Discovery Benefits, Eide Bailly and Northwestern Mutual.
