Biology major receives MnSCU scholarship
Nicole Hall recognized for community service
MSUM junior Nicole Hall has received a $1,500 Barbara J. Penny Scholarship, which recognizes Minnesota State Colleges & Universities students who have demonstrated a commitment to community service.
Hall, a biology major with an emphasis in health and medical sciences, is from Kalispell, Mont., and is one of two students out of 30 applicants to receive the award this year.
Hall, who is captain of the MSUM track team, was recognized for numerous volunteer and community outreach activities, including Chemistry Club, chemistry tutor and Student Athlete Advising Committee.
In preparation for a dental career, she’s volunteered over 100 hours to the Red River Dental Access Project, an urgent care walk-in dental clinic that serves low-income patients who have no insurance or dentist.
“She is always willing to help out wherever needed,” said Michelle Berg, executive director of the Dental Access Project. “She’s shown dedication to giving back to the community and has received great experience observing the dentists and working with sometimes challenging clientele.”
“I am very appreciative to be recognized for my volunteer service and knowing that there is support for people who are reaching out to others,” Hall said. “I hope to someday start my own dental access group.”
