Awards given to Mathematics students
2010-2011 Outstanding Senior Award and Bill Ritchie Award for Excellence in Mathematics
Each year the faculty of the Mathematics Department at Minnesota State University Moorhead selects senior majors to be recognized for their outstanding achievements in mathematics. Selection criteria include mathematics GPA, overall GPA at MSUM, performance in difficult mathematics courses and the results of the ETS Major Field Test in Mathematics.
This year one of the winners is Jon Rue, who is conducting Combinatorics research with Dr. Goyt and has been accepted to NDSU to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics. In addition to recognition by the faculty, Jon will receive membership in the Mathematical Association of America. He has also been awarded the 2011 Bill Ritchie Award for Excellence in Mathematics. His distinguished GPAs and the contributions he’s made to the department has entitled them to this honor. Dr. Ritchie was a former professor of mathematics and upon his death in 1987 a scholarship in his honor was established.
Other scholarship awards are Junior Math Achievement Award to Zachary Morseth; Sophomore Math Achievement Awards to Kelsey Amundson, Abigail Furth and Jennifer Gelnski; Freshmen Math Achievement Awards to Carole Braschayko, Michael Erickson, Lisa Holmann, Holly Johnson and Brady Keller; and Math Specialty Awards (elementary education majors) to Lisa Bruggeman, Jared Mavis and Alecia Baker. These three students will receive a membership in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
