Rainbow Dragon Center added to Campus Campaign

The Rainbow Dragon Center: Serving LGBTQIA has been added to the Campus Campaign: R741 Rainbow Dragon Center. The Rainbow Dragon Center is providing a welcoming and safe space for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, queer, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA) and allied collective community at MSUM. The center offers safe and supportive surroundings for learning about LGBTQIA issues; plus works toward reducing homophobia, heterosexism and genderism while fostering a campus environment of acceptance and understanding.

Award-winning filmmaker visits MSUM

Award-winning filmmaker and festival programmer Skizz Cyzyk will be visiting the MSUM Film Studies department this week, Feb. 24-26. Since 1983, Cyzyk has made more than 50 films and videos, many having won awards and screened at festivals all over the world. Cyzyk is also a film festival programmer, serving as both advisory board and jury member for the Atlanta, Sidewalk Moving Picture, Maryland and Slamdance Film Festivals just to name a few. While at MSUM he will be visiting Film Studies classes and conducting workshops. Cyzyk will also be screening a variety of his work on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. in King Hall 110. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Alumnus gives MSUM $866K

A Minnesota State University Moorhead alumnus who died last year has given more than $860,000 for student scholarships. Julien Burkness, a 1935 graduate who captained the university’s only undefeated football team, bequeathed $866,000 to MSUM for academic and athletic scholarships. The gift is among the top five largest donations MSUM has ever received, said Joan Justesen, vice president of the MSUM Alumni Foundation. The largest is $2 million. MSUM alum, Moorhead educator named Teacher of the Year

Moorhead teacher Ronda Buysse has an unusual gig. She works with the district’s youngest pupils, usually ages 3 or 4. Those are also the youngsters poised to face some of the steepest hurdles in their school careers, and it’s Buysse’s job to give them an early momentum. Buysse, Moorhead’s latest Teacher of the Year, is a veteran of Moorhead’s Early Intervention Services, the district’s team fulfilling a state mandate to educate children with disabilities starting at birth. In the Shades at CMU Feb. 23-24

Victoria, owner of “In The Shades” sunglasses, will return to the CMU on Tuesday, Feb. 23 and Wednesday, Feb. 24th. She will have her designer-inspired sunglasses on display in the CMU Main Lounge. They are $10 each or specially priced lower if you buy 2 or 3 pairs.
