Summer vintage Film Series returns to MSUM
The MSUM Summer Cinema Series this year features a variety of genres and eras, from silents of the 1920s to a blockbuster adventure from the 1950s. The series runs every Monday from June 7 through July 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Weld Hall on the MSUM campus.
Founded in the mid-1970s by late MSUM film professors Ted Larson and Rusty Casselton, the series features retrospective showings of some of Hollywood’s greatest stars in popular motion pictures, as well as a few rare, seldom-seen movies. Each film is preceded by a short subject film or cartoon. Films come from the personal collection of Cindy Casselton.
Film professors from MSUM, Concordia College and the University of North Dakota provide brief introductions to each film. Members of the Red River Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society provide pre-show pipe organ music, and accompany the silent films on the Ted M. Larson Memorial WurliTzer pipe organ.
The schedule for the series is: June 7– The Flying Deueces, a 1939 comedy starring Laurel and Hardy; June 14 – The Nut, a 1921 silent comedy starring Douglas Fairbanks and Marguerite De La Motte; June 21 – 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a 1954 family adventure starring Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Paul Lukas and Peter Lorre; June 28 – Suds, a 1920 silent comedy starring Mary Pickford and Albert Austin; July 5– Of Mice and Men, a 1939 drama starring Burgess Meredith, Betty Field, Lon Chaney, Jr. and Charles Bickford; July 12 — Broken Blossoms, a 1922 drama starring Lillian Gish and Richard Barthelmess; July 19– The Perils of Pauline, a 1947 comedy starring Betty Hutton and John Lund; and July 26 – Seven Chances, a 1925 silent comedy starring Buster Keaton.
All of the films in the series are appropriate for all ages. Tickets are $3 per film, or $20 for the entire series and are sold at the door. Coffee, juice and cookies will be served following the final movie of the season. For more information, please contact Lance Johnson at (701) 237-0477.
