20,000+ school children offer expert opinions for Read Aloud Awards
This year’s Read Aloud winner for books aimed at younger children teaches an important lesson in an entertaining way. The Read Aloud awards program is administered by staff of the MSUM library’s Curriculum Materials Center, which holds a large collection of children’s books and resource materials for teachers.
“At the beginning of the year, we asked publishers to send us copies of picture books published in 2010 that they’d like to nominate for the awards,” says Carol Sibley, MSUM’s curriculum librarian. “We received about 371 titles, which our committee first screened, and selected 201 to be field tested.”
120 MSUM elementary and early childhood education majors, along with 20 elementary school teachers, librarians and day-care providers, read the books aloud to more than 20,000 children. The winners and honor books for younger and older children were determined after the Read Aloud Committee examined feedback from readers and the responses of the children.
Read Aloud winners will be announced Wednesday, May 19 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Joseph School, 202 10th St. S., Moorhead; gather off the east side of the parking lot.
