MSUM Student Council on Exceptional Children Offers Education in a Recession: Expanding Minds with Shrinking Budgets

Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) is hosting the Education in a Recession Conference on Friday and Saturday, February 5-6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at MSUM’s Center for Business. This is a conference on meeting the needs of diverse learners. All events are open to student educators and professional educators at the elementary, high school, and higher education levels.

MSUM psychology Professor Lisa H. Stewart will present the keynote address discussing history, components and implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI). In addition to the keynote, she will also host an interactive question and answer session regarding RTI. Stewart earned her Ph.D. in school psychology from the University of Oregon. She has published several journal articles and book chapters, and regularly presents at state and national conferences. She has had leadership roles in the Minnesota Reading Corps and the MN RTI Center. Her areas of research include early literacy, curriculum-based measurement, RTI, and designing and evaluating academic interventions.

Other speakers include special education and education faculty including Mary Dosch, Dr. Ruth Newton, Dr. Becky Williams, Deb Pullen, Camille Brandt, Dr. John Benson, Dr. Sue Severson, Dr. Steve Street, and Keri DeSutter. A parent panel sharing insight on having children with autism will also be featured.

The cost for the entire conference is $175 for professionals or $35 for students, which includes breakfast, lunch and snacks both days. One undergraduate or graduate credit is available for those who attend the entire conference at an additional cost. An assignment will be due after the conference. Non-credit Continuing Education Units are also available.
