Regional History Day Reschedule for April 7 at Hawley High School

REGIONAL HISTORY DAY RESCHEDULED FOR APRIL 7 AT HAWLEY HIGH SCHOOL
MSUM will host the West Central Regional History Day Tuesday, April 7 beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Hawley High School gymnasium (714 Joseph Street). The date and location were changed due to recent flooding. It’s free and open to the public.
History Day is a co-curricular program that encourages young people to explore an historical subject related to an annual theme, which this year is “The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies.” Students make history come alive as their research leads to imaginative exhibits, original performances, media presentations and papers in junior and senior divisions in seven categories.
MSUM expects 150 students from schools in Fergus Falls, Hawley, Moorhead, Menahga, New York Mills and Perham to participate in the West Central Regional History Day.
The program’s goal is to promote the study of history by engaging students and teachers in the excitement of historical inquiry and creative presentation.
Students in grades six through 12 participate in regional History Day fairs, where historians, educators and professionals in related fields evaluate their work. Students may advance to the statewide contest held May 2 at the University of Minnesota. Top entries in each category in the Minnesota History Day are eligible to participate in the National History Day contest in June in Washington, D.C.
Last year, more than 25,000 Minnesota students participated in History Day, while more than 700,000 students participated nationwide.
