‘Not Your Festival Wear: Fashion and Cultural Appropriation’ Panel Discussion

This student-led panel discussion will examine recent fashion and pop culture trends that “borrow” inspiration from other cultures in an increasingly globalized world, especially when it comes to women’s fashion. Student panelists will address tough questions like: what does it really mean to appropriate something from another culture? How is appropriation fueled by women’s fashions and “white feminism”? And how we can more respectfully engage other cultures? Discussion will be followed by Q&A. How one MSUM student defied all odds to graduate

The alarmingly high dropout rate of American Indian students is not a new reality. According to the National Indian Education Association, the national dropout rate for American Indian students is 15 percent. However, Minnesota State University of Moorhead criminal justice major Cera Swiftwater refused to be a statistic.

Cera_5561 webcopySwiftwater grew up on the South Dakota Pine Ridge Reservation, where she was raised by her 17-year-old single mother. When Swiftwater was 15, she and her four brothers and sisters were placed in foster care. During her time in the foster care system, Swiftwater moved from school to school and even switched schools three different times over the course of four months.

Swiftwater stayed focused and remained on track to graduate high school. She says she was motivated by hoping to set an example for her younger family members. Read the rest of this entry →

Friday Nights celebrate Native American Heritage Month

A Night of Tradition: Celebrating Native American Heritage Month will be Friday, Nov. 18 from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. in the CMU Underground. It’s a Friday Nights event in partnership with the American Indian Student Association. Activities include traditional food and dance, showing of the film Reel Injuns, and dreamcatcher and beadwork crafts.
