Tim Peil receives distinguished teaching award

Tim Peil, Mathematics, was named winner of the 2010 Distinguished Teaching Award of the North Central Section of the Mathematical Association of America at their spring meeting Saturday. Peil has taught at MSUM since 1990. The citation accompanying the award specifically mentions “his energy and enthusiasm” in the classroom. The Mathematical Association of America is the principal professional organization of college and university mathematics educators in the United States and Canada. The regional units of the association are called sections, and each of the 29 sections can award one distinguished teaching award each year. The North Central Section consists of Minnesota, North Dakota, more than half of South Dakota, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the corner of Ontario containing Thunder Bay.

Henry Gwiazda’s video composition screened in England

Music Department faculty member Henry Gwiazda’s video composition, “On the Roof,” was screened at the International Festival of Movement and Screen in Liverpool, England, on April 22. He also recently learned that his video, “Scattered Wide,” has been accepted for presentation at the International Computer Music Conference in Stony Brook, N.Y., in June.

Maraca2 Percussion Duo to perform with MSUM Percussion Ensemble Tuesday

The British percussion duo Maraca2 will present a 7:30 p.m. concert Tuesday, April 27 in the Gaede Theatre to culminate a four-day residency at MSUM. They will be joined by members of the MSUM Percussion Ensemble for two selections. The Duo has invited the Percussion Ensemble to then travel with them to Minneapolis Thursday morning to perform alongside them at the prestigious “International Marimba Festival.” The Festival will feature marimbists from across the world for three days of performances with ensembles, including the Minnesota Orchestra and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.
