Visual artist Rachel Breen to deliver talk Nov. 12

Thursday, Nov. 12 | Noon | Center for Business Room 111

Visual artist Rachel Breen will deliver an artist talk on Thursday, Nov. 12, at noon in Minnesota State Moorhead’s Center for Business Room 111. The talk is free and open to the public.

Breen’s work explores critical possibilities of the sewing machine, which she uses to draw and create sculptural installations. Her accomplishments include a solo exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, a Fulbright Fellowship to India, the McKnight Fellowship for Visual Artists, the Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship, and five Minnesota State Arts Board grants.

She holds an MFA from the University of Minnesota. Breen is a tenured professor of art at Anoka Ramsey Community College, where she chairs the Department of Fine Arts.

Breen writes about her work: “I reveal, viscerally and poetically how the clothes we wear are a material connection with the workers, around the globe, who make them. My interest in labor rights stems from histories of Jewish activism in the garment industry and my own family’s history as immigrants. My focus on people who sew garments visually emphasizes we are part of a global community.”
