Annual Fire Drills
Annual fire drills may be conducted in campus buildings throughout the academic year. To support emergency preparedness and evaluate campus response procedures, drills may occur without advance notice. When an alarm sounds, immediately evacuate using the nearest safe exit and remain outside until an official all-clear is given. Treat every alarm as a real emergency.
Building Emergency Plans are located in classrooms, laboratories, conference rooms, departmental offices, and residence halls as part of the University’s Emergency Management Plan. These plans identify emergency exit routes, fire extinguisher locations, fire alarm pull stations, and other important safety information. Students and employees are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the plans and identify the nearest safe exit from areas they frequently occupy.
What to Do When the Fire Alarm Sounds
When a fire alarm is activated:
- Stop what you are doing immediately.
- Exit the building using the nearest safe exit.
- Do not use elevators during an evacuation.
- Move away from the building and keep all entrances, roadways, fire lanes, and fire hydrants clear for emergency responders.
- Remain outside until Public Safety, emergency responders, or college officials provide an official all-clear.
- Follow all instructions provided by Public Safety and emergency personnel.
Important Reminders
- Treat every alarm as a real emergency.
- Assist individuals who may need assistance evacuating when it is safe to do so.
- Do not delay evacuation to gather personal belongings.
- Do not re-enter the building until authorized.
- Report blocked exits, fire hazards, or other safety concerns to Public Safety.
Remember: Don’t just get out, get away. Moving away from the building helps ensure safe evacuation, allows emergency responders unobstructed access, and supports accountability efforts during an emergency.
