Geoscience Students Map Millions of Years of History on Cañon City Field Course

Over the summer, geology students trekked out to Cañon City, Colorado for an exciting and challenging field course. Students learned how to describe and measure rock units in the field, create geologic maps based on the field data they collected, construct stratigraphic columns by hand, and to avoid getting poked by numerous cacti. Students worked in teams to unravel the geologic history of the Cañon City area and examined rocks from a time when a large part of Colorado was under a great inland sea. They climbed mountains, collected fossils, had a great time exploring the dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park, and made memories that will last a lifetime. The geoscience team is looking forward to more experiential learning opportunities for our students in the near future, so stay tuned!
