School of Social Work Students Study Human Rights via International Field Trip
On February 20-21, 2026 Professors Linda Jaeger, IV-E Child Welfare Scholar Coordinator and Janelle Miedema, the Ozhiitaa Program Coordinator traveled to Winnipeg, Manitoba for a field trip to learn more about human rights. Our trip was in conjunction with the Study Abroad Class this spring.
This excursion included visiting the Canadian Museum for Human Rights with a guided tour of this amazing facility. In addition, we were able to visit the Inner City Social Work Program, a special program of the University of Manitoba. This program has been in existence for over 80 years and was developed to specifically work with the Indigenous people that relocated to this area in the 1950’s due to legislative changes. This program has provided them education and training for personal success. Many graduates are now employed in prominent roles throughout the Canadian government.
This was a excellent time of learning, interacting with the culture, and getting to know our social work students in a more comprehensive way. Our students were outstanding representatives of MSUM and our state.
