Dragons Present at Society for Neuroscience Conference

Six Minnesota State Moorhead undergraduate students presented the research they have been doing with Biosciences professor Dr. Adam Stocker at the Society for Neuroscience conference that took place in San Diego, CA from November 15th through 19th. Bioscience majors Madison Aberle, Aisha Chovuchovu, and Colton Tapson; BCBT majors Eyerusalem Kinfe and Opeyemi Olowoniyi; and BCBT/Psychology double major Guzoro Adumah, presented their work on behavioral and thalamic changes that occur during the critical period in genetically altered Emx2 mice, to help improve our understanding of how the mammalian brain develops.

This conference allowed students to engage with more than 20,000 neuroscientists from around the world on a variety of topics from brain development, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s Disease, ALS, stroke, machine-brain prosthetic interfaces, aging, addiction, GLP-1 mediated appetite regulation, the neuro-immune axis, microglial and astrocyte function, and many more. Students were able to interact with faculty and admissions staff during a large graduate fair, potential employers at a huge vendor show, and interact with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at many poster sessions. This is in addition to the variety of oral presentations of varying length and depth on a myriad of neuroscience topics.

Despite the large size of this conference, the number of undergraduates in attendance accounts for a very small percentage. These 6 students did a tremendous job representing MSUM and made plenty of inroads into future careers in science.
