Minnesota State Moorhead Oceanarium publishes its first research paper on Ocean Literacy

The MSUM Oceanarium offers a summer program as part of College for Kids called Junior Aquarist Camp for Kids (JACK). Biology (EEB) majors Katie Hanson and Amber Sullivan developed and assessed the effectiveness of curricula based on the seven principles of Ocean Literacy (https://oceanliteracy.unesco.org/). The resulting manuscript based on that work has been accepted for publication in Current, the peer-reviewed journal of the National Marine Educator’s Association. The research article is entitled “Ocean Literacy of Youth in the Prairie Region of the Midwest, USA“. This publication is the fifth peer-reviewed research paper based on data collected by Katie Hanson while she was an undergraduate at MSUM, making her the most-published Biology major in MSUM history. After graduating MSUM in 2023, Katie worked at the SEA LIFE Kansas City Public Aquarium before returning to Moorhead to be Facility Coordinator of the MSUM Oceanarium.
