Nibbe gift allows undergraduate travel to literacy conference

Four Moorhead education students recently attended The Reading League Annual Conference, Oct. 8-10 in Chicago. This opportunity was made possible thanks to the Nibbe Family Foundation’s recent gift to the university’s School of Teaching and Learning.

One earmark of the $5.5 million donation is creating more opportunities for students to attend professional conferences. Attending this conference were Averie Burmeister, Sierra McAlpine, and Sam Wilson, all Early Childhood Education majors, and Elementary Inclusive Education major Maria Wagner.

“At a conference with almost 2,500 attendees, our students were the only preservice teachers in attendance,” said Professor Erin Gillett, who attended the conference with the students. “Everyone who met them was impressed and expressed hope for the future of teaching.”

The students had the opportunity to meet first grade teacher, author and podcast co-host Lindsay Kemeny, researcher Molly Ness, reading researcher and neuroscientist Dr. G Reid Lyon, and Anita Archer, a legend in the field of literacy.
