Moorhead and Zakho Sign Historic Friendship Proclamation

A milestone moment in international friendship and cultural exchange unfolded in Moorhead on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, as officials from the City of Moorhead and Zakho, Kurdistan, gathered to sign a Friendship Proclamation at Minnesota State Moorhead’s Christianson Alumni Center. 

This proclamation represents both cities’ commitment to cultural exchange, educational opportunities, and economic development. It symbolizes unity and a spirit of collaboration, highlighting the goodwill that transcends borders and unites people through shared values. 

The celebration featured the ceremonial signing of the proclamation and remarks from Minnesota State Moorhead President Tim Downs, Moorhead Mayor Shelly Carlson and Guhdar Sheekhoo, Head of the Zakho Independent Administration.

The event also marks the celebration of a new student and faculty exchange agreement between Minnesota State Moorhead and the University of Zakho—an educational bridge with global significance.

“Today is a historic occasion to celebrate a moment of connection and collaboration, and to affirm and move forward our collective commitment to fostering global understanding and friendship across borders,” President Downs said. 

Note: Moorhead is home to an estimated 3,500 Kurds, making up approximately 8 percent of the city’s population.
