Stop flushing wipes; your actions will prevent costly repairs
It’s a problem here and everywhere. MSUM has had dozens of sewage backups across campus in the past three years, including another one that occurred in the library last week. These incidents cost disruptions and costly repairs, and they’re preventable. The cost to the university exceeds $100,000, which could be better used for campus improvements.
- Flushable wipes and paper towels don’t break down. They maintain their sheet-style shape, which makes it difficult to move through pipes, often sticking to them. This blockage can only be removed by mechanical means.
- Flushing excessive amounts of toilet paper can also cause blockages. If extra toilet paper is required, please do multiple flushes instead of flushing all the toilet paper at once.
- Buildings on our campus have aging piping systems. They become rough with age and are more susceptible to having blockages.
- Flush only the three Ps down the toilet: pee, poo, and (toilet) paper. Do not flush:
- Flushable wipes
- Paper towels
- Tampons
- Q-tips
- Kleenex tissue
- Be responsible. Be sustainable. Protect your campus. Let’s all do our part to prevent the next costly and messy sewage backup.
- Watch the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Wipes Clog Pipes video to see how unsustainable ‘flushable’ wipes are.
Thank you for taking this message seriously.
