Broadcast Journalism Student Honored with Prestigious NATAS Scholarship
Broadcast Journalism student Christopher Hovden was recently announced as the 2024 Bob Fransen Leadership Scholarship recipient by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Upper Midwest Foundation. Hovden was recognized for his work as a co-anchor, producer, reporter, photographer, and writer on the university’s Campus News program. Hovden also recently produced and premiered a full length documentary, The Pioneer Barber, which chronicled the life and legacy of freed slave turned Clay County entrepreneur Felix Battles.
Hovden caught the video bug while attending Pelican Rapids High School. He served as the student director of videography, which led to many long days producing live sports and other activities.
In addition to Campus News, he’s also a part of MSUM’s University Choir, Concert Choir, and Dragon Scales Vocal Jazz.
“MSUM has given me countless opportunities to hone my craft and learn things about myself I’ve never known,” Hovden said. “It has given me many friendships and mentorships that I hope to continue for the rest of my life.”
Hovden is a producer intern at WDAY TV and plans to continue working there after graduating in May 2025.
His parents are Amy Starkey of Pelican Rapids and Chad Hovden of Fergus Falls.
