MSUM helps students displaced by recent fire
As you may be aware, 14 MSU Moorhead students were displaced by the October 11th Galleria apartment fire in south Fargo. The F-M community is being asked to help and there are several appeals underway, including tax-deductible non-profit organizations like the Red Cross, the United Way, and the Salvation Army.
MSUM is trying to provide needed assistance with books, financial aid and housing, but there will still be a great need for these students to recover lost items – including computers, furniture and clothing.
If you would like to contribute to a fund specifically for our students, you can drop off any check/cash donations (non-deductible) at the Moorhead Affinity Plus locations–CMU 104 or at 404 S. 8th Street Suite B, or send them in the mail to either location. If you are sending a check, please make the check payable to “MSUM Fire Victims.” In addition, Affinity Plus members can donate their Purchase Participation Points. All funds will be given directly to MSUM’s affected students. Affinity Plus will match donations that are received by Wednesday, November 24, 2010.
According to a recent WDAY-TV news story, MSUM’s Vice President of Student Affairs, and two other VP’s each “adopted” 5 students, to help them with anything they need.
The school provided living at residence halls, replaced any textbooks that were lost and the financial aid office re-worked their financing to get more grants and loans. MSUM officials say this is the least they can do for their students.
“I think that’s just part of who we are. The students that were in a crisis situation, that was totally unexpected that they needed help.”
