Social issues focus of music event
A concert featuring the MSUM Commercial Music Ensemble and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble is set for Thursday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Hansen Theater in the Roland Dille Center for the Arts on the MSUM campus. Titled “re:UNITY,” the event will include popular, uplifting music and guest speakers from the community who will discuss social issues and share personal stories. Tickets for the event are $5 for students and $10 for adults.
“As President of Minnesota State University Moorhead, I proudly support the talented and passionate students, faculty and community members who are instrumental in creating re:UNITY to raise awareness of important social issues,” says MSUM president Anne Blackhurst. “Given MSUM’s commitment to diversity as a core value and strategic anchor, it is imperative that we come together as a community to show support for those who are displaced, impoverished and discriminated against. I look forward to participating in this event and invite all community members to attend.”
The event was developed through conversations between MSUM’s Community Outreach Coordinator Shireen Alemadi and music faculty members Michael Krajewski and Sherrine Mostin. Krajewski says the transformative powers of music can help focus attention on social issues facing the world today.
A pre-concert social hour takes place at 6 p.m. in the Great White Hall in the Center for the Arts. The social hour is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Michael Krajewski at (218) 477-2101 or email him at michael.krajewski@mnstate.edu.
