Biochemistry and Biology faculty present experiential learning implementation at inaugural Pollinators in Northern Climates meeting

Michelle Tigges (Chemistry & Biochemistry) and Sara Anderson (Biosciences) presented, “Implementation of eDNA based insect experiments as an undergraduate course-based research project” at the inaugural meeting for Pollinators in Northern Climates in Fargo, ND on Oct 30, 20206.  This is an interdisciplinary approach to provide equitable access to experiential learning opportunities within required courses or restricted electives.

This work was well-received by the community of researchers, state and federal agency representatives, and non-governmental organizations at the meeting.  Many attendees wanted to know more about how they could implement similar approaches with their undergraduate students.  We also gathered leads on new research and internship opportunities for students.

Course-based research offers a sustainable approach to providing all students with experiential learning and maximizing the student’s return on investment.  These approaches can work when critical infrastructure is in place consisting of modern laboratories and lab support specialists, Cheryl Brown and Todd Nolte.
