Welcome, Emma Burns, assistant professor of animation

Emma Burns joined the Dragon Community in mid-August as the assistant professor of animation in the School of Media Arts and Design. She teaches animation courses that cover everything from foundations of animation through 2D animation, 3D animation, and stop motion animation.

Q: What drew you to MSUM?
A: I graduated from Ohio State University, and there were a couple of adjunct professors from the graduate program who worked here previously. They had very positive things to say. They really enjoyed their time teaching here, and how passionate the students are.

Q: What unique experiences or skills do you bring to MSUM?
A: I am a 3D animator. I have worked on applying that skill in a variety of different areas, both into film and commercial purposes, marketing purposes, and even theater purposes. I’ve worked on a wide variety of different outlets for my scouts.

Q: What goals does your department have that excite you?
A: Our department is working on really fleshing out the animation program and developing it to be bigger and stronger than ever before.

Q: What’s unique about your academic program? What makes it a high-quality program?
A: Our program focuses on teaching students not only the technical skills of animation but the theoretical and historical aspects of film and animation. We encourage students to explore all facets of animation and not just one particular, very specialized outlet.

Q: What’s one thing people might not know about you?
A: My very first job was a ride operator at an amusement park when I was 16. It was very fun.

Q: What energizes you outside of work?
A: I have three main hobbies. I love listening to music. I like playing video games ,and I like reading. I’m currently reading “This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me.”

Welcome to the Dragon Community, Emma!
