Minnesota State Moorhead announces new Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence
Minnesota State Moorhead has launched a new, hybrid Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MS in AI), the first of its kind in the Red River Valley. Classes will begin in Fall 2027.
The 30-credit program is designed to prepare workforce-ready AI professionals through applied, hands-on learning and real-world projects. Intended for recent graduates and early- to mid-career professionals, the program develops expertise in AI development and deployment, machine learning, intelligent systems, and AI leadership. Students will be able to choose between two emphasis options: AI in Business and AI in Healthcare Administration.
“The empowerment to be able to shape the changing world of AI deployment is exactly what this master’s program is designed to convey,” says Dr. Andrew Chen, a professor in the Department of Computer Sciences and Information Systems.
The program was developed in response to growing workforce demand for AI expertise across industries. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of data scientists to grow 34% from 2024 to 2034, while employment of computer and information research scientists is projected to grow 20% over the decade. The MS in AI will prepare graduates with the technical skills needed to develop, implement, and lead AI initiatives in a rapidly evolving economy.
Last fall, the university established the Institute of Applied Artificial Intelligence to help build AI skills across education and other industries. The institute connects higher education, PK-12 schools, workforce leaders, and employers through initiatives such as AI literacy training, educator development, Applied AI Clinics, employer partnerships, and workforce alignment efforts.
The university has continued to strengthen its reputation as a leader in AI education. This June, Moorhead received the inaugural AI Innovation Award at Engage Summit 2026, recognizing its commitment to advancing AI-powered engagement and innovation.
The new MS in AI builds on this momentum and further positions Moorhead as a regional leader in artificial intelligence education.
