Kratom & 7-OH: What Students Should Know
You may have seen products labeled kratom, 7-OH, 7-hydroxy, or 7-hydroxymitragynine sold online, at convenience stores, or in vape shops. They can come in gummies, tablets, powders, capsules, shots, drink mixes, or extracts, and some concentrated 7-OH products may not be clearly labeled as kratom.
These products are not risk-free. Regular use can lead to dependence, cravings, tolerance, and withdrawal. Serious health effects have also been reported, and risks may increase when kratom is mixed with alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants, antidepressants, or other substances.
A few things to know:
- In Minnesota, possession of kratom by anyone under age 21 is illegal. Selling or giving kratom to anyone under 21 is also illegal.
- “Store-bought” or legally available does not necessarily mean safe.
- If you are worried about your own use or someone else’s, you do not have to figure it out alone.
- Call 911 if someone is having trouble breathing, has a seizure, collapses, or cannot be awakened.
