Koehler & Lien Named 2026 Student Employee Supervisors of the Year
Minnesota State Moorhead is proud to recognize Derek Lien, Communications Coordinator, and Ryan Koehler, Graphic Designer, as the 2026 Student Employee Supervisors of the Year.
This award, presented during National Student Employment Week, honors supervisors who demonstrate exceptional commitment to mentoring, developing, and supporting student employees.
Derek and Ryan were selected from a strong pool of nominees, reflecting the many supervisors across campus who invest in student growth and success. MSUM is fortunate to have so many dedicated professionals who create meaningful learning experiences for student employees.
In Marketing and Communications, Derek and Ryan have created an environment where student employees are trusted, challenged, and supported. Their student graphic designer, Lindsey Nelsen, shared that, under their leadership, they were given opportunities to work on high-impact, highly visible projects that went far beyond typical expectations for a student role. These projects included designing murals throughout Owens Hall, one of which has become a popular photo spot for prospective students, as well as illustrating the President’s Holiday Greeting card.
Derek and Ryan intentionally involve student employees in the full creative process. From brainstorming sessions to strategic discussions, they help students understand not just what to design, but why it matters. This approach gives students insight into the real-world application of their work and helps them build both technical skills and professional confidence.
They are known for setting high expectations while also providing the guidance and support needed to meet them. Their feedback, whether affirming or challenging, consistently pushes students to grow and refine their work. Students describe leaving critique sessions feeling motivated and equipped to take their skills to the next level.
What sets Derek and Ryan apart is the level of trust they place in their student employees. They provide opportunities for students to lead meaningful projects, meet real deadlines, and contribute to work that represents the university. Through this experience, students gain not only portfolio-ready work but also a deeper understanding of collaboration, brand strategy, and professional practice.
Derek and Ryan’s mentorship extends beyond skill development. They are preparing students for life after graduation by modeling professionalism, fostering creativity, and creating a collaborative and inclusive team environment where students feel valued and empowered.
Congratulations to Derek and Ryan on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for the lasting impact you are making on student employees at MSUM.
