Slips, Trips, and Falls are not an Olympic sport
Winter and the Winter Olympics will be here soon. Watching speed skating, curling, or snowboarding from the comfort of your couch is a great idea. But this time of year, in Minnesota, walking anywhere can be considered an extreme sport, or at the very least, a full-body workout. While we do all we can to prevent accidental figure-skating routines on campus, we need your help to keep these games strictly non-competitive.
Winter weather, accompanied by snow and ice, increases the risk of slips, trips, and falls. To ensure a safe campus environment, please follow these guidelines and report hazards promptly.
Preventive Measures
- Wear appropriate footwear with good traction.
- Walk slowly and take short steps, keeping your center of gravity over your feet.
- Use salted or cleared paths and avoid shortcuts through snow or ice.
- Utilize hand railings when available.
- Avoid distractions such as texting or reading while walking.
- Carry items carefully; keep hands free by using backpacks.
- Check weather updates and allow extra time for travel.
- Report slippery conditions to the Physical Plant at 218-477-2662 immediately.
Reporting Procedures
If an accident occurs, follow these steps:
- Call 911 for emergencies.
- Employees: Report injuries to Public Safety (218-477-2449), your supervisor, and Human Resources (218-477-2157) immediately.
- Non-employees (students, guests, vendors): Report injuries to Public Safety (218-477-2449) as soon as possible.
Thank you for helping us maintain a safe winter season!
