Minnesota State Moorhead ACM Club Team Captures First Place at Computing Competition

The Department of Computer Science & Information Systems at Minnesota State Moorhead proudly announces its first-ever first-place victory at the 2025 DKC³ Collegiate Computing Competition, held October 17 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. Hosted by Digi‑Key Electronics, the competition brought together 20 university teams, each typically composed of four students, to tackle rigorous programming and word-problem challenges.

Minnesota State Moorhead entered two teams into the event consisting of active members of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Club. Team Function Skibidi consisting of Minnesota State Moorhead students Max Sheridan, James Zook, and Dan Colson took first place. Both teams were advised by Ronni Kurtzhals, faculty member in the Department of Computer Science & Information Systems.

Despite competing with only three members instead of the usual four, team Function Skibidi emerged victorious in a landslide, securing the top prize and marking a major milestone for Minnesota State Moorhead’s Computer Science & Information Systems program. They also secured a cash award of $5,000 for first place for the club. Each individual member of the first-place team receives an individual prize valued at $300.

This win is a landmark achievement for the CSIS program, the first time their students have captured the top spot at DKC³. This also highlights the growing strength of Moorhead’s ACM chapter as a hub for student collaboration and technical excellence.
