When the Centuries Align

At the office, the Internet connection has slowed to a crawl. The data can’t be pushed any harder onto the screen of my laptop. There is a light snow falling outside, no wind. I make some tea my spouse packed for me to souse between grading and teaching: “Christmas in Paris,” an herbal blend. As the tea steeps, I wonder whether the Internet speed or the snowfall will find their second wind first. My second-hand CD player still can spin a disc, so I pop in a fifty-cent thrift store find, Chill with Bach. Despite my distaste for cold weather, there is a clarity in all of this, even for a moment. The “Concerto for Two Violins in D minor” sounds clear, the snow falling in ornamental strands of crystal, the spicy tea flavor lingering, all welcome. The call of 21st century work, pushed aside for a while by a person born in the 20th century, listening to the pristine recording of a composer from the 17th century, staring at the light snow through a 19th century window.
