Moorhead and Zakho to Sign Historic Friendship Proclamation

A milestone moment in international friendship and cultural exchange will unfold in Moorhead on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, as officials from the City of Moorhead and Zakho, Kurdistan, gather to sign a Friendship Proclamation at Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Christianson Alumni Center, 707 11 St S, Moorhead.

This proclamation represents both cities’ commitment to cultural exchange, educational opportunities, and economic development. It symbolizes unity and a spirit of collaboration, highlighting the goodwill that transcends borders and unites people through shared values.

Media is invited to attend the ceremonial signing at 10:00 am, featuring remarks from Moorhead Mayor Shelly Carlson and Guhdar Sheekhoo (Gooh-dar She-kho), Head of the Zakho Independent Administration. The proclamation affirms a shared commitment to cultural connection, educational exchange, and economic development.

The invite-only event also marks the celebration of a new student and faculty exchange agreement between Minnesota State University Moorhead and the University of Zakho—an educational bridge with global significance. Coffee and traditional Kurdish sweets will be served.

Note: Moorhead is home to an estimated 3,500 Kurds, making up approximately 8 percent of the city’s population.
