MOORHEAD — As final exams wrap up for students at Minnesota State University Moorhead, some of the seniors are now readying for graduation.
The ceremony is set for Thursday, Dec. 19. And despite the snowstorm expected Wednesday night, staff says they’re ready to roll with the punches.
MSUM typically holds two commencement ceremonies after fall semester.
But in 2024, they had already planned to hold three: in the Hanson Theatre at the Roland Dille Center for the Arts, instead of in Alex Nemzek Hall.
The change was for better access, closer parking and smaller events. It comes at a perfect time with the storm.
Dealing with wintry weather during the December commencement is nothing new for MSUM.
“Two years ago, we did have around 12 inches of snow come in, not the day, but the day before, and so we still held commencement for our graduates,” George Tippens, vice president of finance and administration, said.
With the winter storm warning and the potential for 6 inches of snow or more Thursday, Tippens says they’re working to make sure things go as planned.
“We’re going to do everything in our power to still hold commencement for our students, especially because a lot of friends and family are already traveling in the area. They’re coming from out of town. They may already be here,” Tippens said.
