MSU Moorhead’s Campus News newscast has been honored by three different journalism organizations.

The Society of Professional Journalists named Campus News as the winner in the student news magazine category in its annual Mark of Excellence Region 6 Awards. The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence Awards for Region 6 includes colleges and universities in the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Campus News also earned 1st Place in the Student Morning Newscast category in the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association annual Eric Sevareid Awards. The Campus News sportscast also took 1st Place in the sportscast category. The MBJA Eric Sevareid Awards includes the six-state region of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska.

Campus News also won a Crystal Pillar in the College Magazine Program category from the Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in its annual Student Production Awards. The NATAS Upper Midwest Chapter includes the five-state region of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

Students involved with the broadcasting program also won numerous individual awards. MSUM students took home 14 MBJA Eric Sevareid Awards in numerous categories. That included a sweep of the awards handed out in the Student Videography category.

Five of the individual awards were in radio categories. All were students in Professor Aaron Quanbeck’s Broadcast Journalism class and had their work air on KMSC’s Dragon Radio.

The awards were handed out during the Midwest Journalism Conference, recently held in Minneapolis. The Program Director for Campus News, Dr. Aaron Quanbeck, said these awards validate all the time and effort the students put into their work. “The students spend many hours each week gathering what they need for their stories, writing their scripts, and editing it all together. These awards recognize their commitment to quality journalism.” said Quanbeck.

Campus News airs on Prairie Public Television at 8:30 AM during the spring semester. Archived newscasts and stories are also available on the Campus News YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/MSUMCampusNews.
