Reminder: MLK events kick off Jan. 12

January 12-19, 2024, MSUM will observe and celebrate Dr. Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. MSUM and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion will commemorate MLK through collaborative community engagements with Freds Dissonance and Concordia College. We encourage all members of our MSUM community to honor Dr. King by engaging in opportunities to “strengthen community, empower individuals, and bridge barriers.”

MLK Day Kickoff Event
Friday, January 12 | 7 p.m. | Centrum, Knutson Campus Center | Concordia College

Join us at Concordia College’s MLK Day kickoff event featuring Los Angeles-based comedian, actor, and writer Chinedu Unaka (pronunciation: Chin-eh-doo Oo-nah-kahs). The Office of Diversity and Inclusion will provide transportation with limited seating. RSVP on Dragon Central.

MLK Day “Communities in Action, Empowering the Dream”
Monday, January 15 | 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Locations Vary | Concordia College

A variety of sessions will be free and open to the public, including a keynote by Funmilola Fagbamila and an opportunity for reflection and interactive connection. The Office of Diversity and Inclusion will provide transportation with limited seating. RSVP on Dragon Central.

MLK Day Celebration – Umoja 55
Monday, January 15 | 6 to 8:30 p.m. | Fargo Theater

Umoja 55: Dreamers Unite showcases the power of dreams, unity, and hope, particularly among the youth, as they present their artistic interpretations of MLK’s vision. The keynote speaker will be MSUM’s Zinnia Marquette, Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator. The Office of Diversity and Inclusion will provide transportation with limited seating. Narrative 4 Exchange: Communities of Care
Tuesday, January 16 | 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. | Comstock Memorial Union 105

A Narrative 4 story exchange will invite students to participate in storytelling that is designed to teach compassion and empathy and develop strong leaders in the classroom and community.

Service Project Opportunity
Jan. 12-19 | Comstock Memorial Union 120

The campus community is invited to donate winter gear items that will be distributed to MSUM students in need from Jan. 24-Feb. 23. We are collecting coats/jackets, scarves, gloves/mittens, hats, winter socks and boots. All items must be new or freshly laundered and free of holes or stains. The drop-off location is the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, CMU 120.

Items will be distributed Jan. 24 through Feb. 23. For students wishing to pick up select items, set up an appointment by contacting the Office of Diversity and Inclusion in CMU 120, diversity@mnstate.edu or 218.477.2652.
