Two emergency alert systems to be tested October 4
Monthly outdoor warning siren test will be followed by national test alert on cell phones, radios, TVs
On Wednesday, October 4, two emergency alert system tests will occur in the early afternoon.
The monthly outdoor warning siren test will happen at 1 p.m. Then, between 1:20-1:50 p.m. there will be a one-minute national test alert on cell phones, radios and televisions. The purpose of both tests is to ensure that systems are effective in warning the public about emergencies.
During the national test, cell phones capable of receiving the test message will vibrate and sound a unique tone with the message: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
Newer mobile phones may include a setting to opt out of tests and alerts. None of those settings will affect the 2023 national test. If your mobile phone is on and receiving service from a participating wireless provider, you should receive the national test. If you wish to avoid receiving the test alert on your smartphone or device, it must be turned off during the 30-minute transmission period (scheduled for 1:20 to 1:50 p.m. CST) to prevent the broadcast sound and notification.
More information on the national test can be found here.
