Veterans Week website

MSU Moorhead will host various Veterans Week events honoring our military-connected students, alumni, employees and community members Nov. 4 through 11 on the MSUM campus.

Felix Battles Monument Unveiling –The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County will unveil a monument dedicated to the life and service of Felix Battles, an African American pioneer businessman of Moorhead who escaped slavery and fought for the Union in the American Civil War. The unveiling takes place Saturday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. near MSUM’s Center for Business (721 11th Street South, Moorhead). MSUM was chosen as the site for the monument because Felix Battles’ old home stood next to the university’s Center for Business. Read more about Felix Battles.

Honoring our Military Heroes/True Sons of Freedom Art Exhibit –A veteran appreciation event honoring our military heroes will be held Monday, Nov. 6,at 4:30 p.m. in the Roland Dille Center for the Arts Gaede Stage (801 13th Street South, Moorhead). It will explore The True Sons of Freedom Art Exhibit on display in the Gaede Stage, commemorating World War I by showcasing powerful photographs of African American soldiers from Virginia who fought overseas for freedoms they were denied at home. These pocket-sized portraits, submitted by these Veterans, challenge the stereotypes and cultural limitations of their time.

Guest speakers include Markus Krueger, program director at the Historical & Cultural Society of Clay County, who will share an interpretation of the True Sons of Freedom exhibit, weaving together accounts of the servicemen pictured with stories of Veterans from our region; Dave Bellefeuille, Minnesota Department of Veteran Affairs senior administrative officer and an active-duty Navy Veteran who served for 10 years, will share his invaluable insights and experience working with Veterans persevering in higher education; and MSUM Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs, Dr. Arrick Jackson, also a Veteran, will conclude with meaningful reflections on the importance of supporting our military community.
