Flood Update from the City of Moorhead
Dan Mahli, Moorhead City Manager, shares positive updates on potential flood impacts this spring:
For starters, we are fortunate for the investments made in permanent flood improvements since 2009. With the help of the State of Minnesota and local residents, we are in a significantly better place when it comes to flood control. The extensive infrastructure already in place means many of the areas that were vulnerable to previous floods are now protected. The benefits provided by the improvements are evident this spring and will prevent many hardships from occurring in the first place.
A couple weeks ago, we initiated actions in a detailed flood plan to activate permanent infrastructure and deploy temporary measures where needed. It’s not so much about deciding what needs to be done, but determining when to do so. Because of the investments:
- There is no anticipated need for sandbags or volunteers to protect public infrastructure.
- Some private property owners may still need to sandbag. Property owners seeking volunteer assistance with sandbag filling and levee construction are asked to call FirstLink at 211. Interested volunteers may also call FirstLink and be matched with opportunities (specify Moorhead or Clay County if desired).
- As of now, with the exception of park and road closures on the riverfront, most services in the City of Moorhead should not be impacted.
- Street closure maps, Flood Zone contacts, and other information is available on our Flood website (www.cityofmoorhead.com/flood) and general inquiries can be made by calling Moorhead’s Flood Call Center at 218-299-5300.
The City’s flood team will continue to monitor flood and precipitation forecasts and communicate as the situation develops. I am certain you share our gratitude that schools, businesses, and community services can continue as usual compared to the efforts and resources expended for a flood just a few years ago. Please know team Moorhead is made up of fierce warriors – so good and smart.
