Campus News Named Best College News Magazine by SPJ, Sportscast Earns Eric Sevareid Award

The Society of Professional Journalists has named MSUM’s Campus News as the winner in the student news magazine category in its annual Mark of Excellence Region 6 Awards. In addition, MSUM students earned ten individual awards in six different television and radio categories.

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence Awards for Region 6 includes colleges and universities in the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. First place winners in each category advance to the national round of judging.

The Campus News Sportscast also earned an Award of Merit in the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association (MBJA) annual Eric Sevareid Awards. MSUM students also took home eleven individual awards. The Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association Eric Sevareid Awards includes the six-state region of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska. Seven of the awards were in the Radio Reporting categories. All were students in Professor Aaron Quanbeck’s Broadcast Journalism class and had their work air on KMSC’s Dragon Radio.

Campus News students also received recognition from the Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in its annual Student Production Awards. Three students received Crystal Pillar Awards in writing, reporting and photography categories. The NATAS Upper Midwest Chapter includes the five-state region of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

The awards were handed out during the Midwest Journalism Conference, recently held in Minneapolis. The Program Director for Campus News, Dr. Aaron Quanbeck, said recognition from these organizations is an indicator of the time and effort the students put into their stories. “It’s gratifying to see that all the hard work of these students has paid off. They are all very deserving of this recognition.” said Quanbeck.

Campus News airs on Prairie Public Television Saturdays at 8:30 AM during the spring semester. Archived newscasts and stories are also available on the Campus News YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/MSUMCampusNews.
